Introducing Cluais...
A very small little dog put a big smile on our faces here at Limerick
Animal Welfare today. Cluais (pronounced Clue-ish - it means "ear" in
Irish) is a little terrier tomboy and he's just ten to twelve weeks
old. A lady called Eila who is one of our most hard-working volunteers
got a phone call about Cluais last week. To her horror, she discovered
when she went to rescue him that someone had cut the tops off both his
ears. The vet reckoned it had to have been done with a scissors.
If your dog has ever had a nick on his ear, you'll know how much even
the smallest ear injury can bleed. The pain and suffering Cluais would
have gone through doesn't bear thinking about. Well, the resilience
and forgiveness of dogs never ceases to amaze us, and typically,
Cluais wasn't a bit down in the dumps about his poor ears, and had a
friendly wag of the tail and lots of kisses for all of his admirers
this week. He was a bit nervous at first, but once he got lots of rubs
and cuddles and realised that no one was going to hit him, he became
everyone's new best friend! Eila took him under her wing and fostered
him at home, where he quickly came to enjoy playing with her own two
doggies. Once the vet gave Cluais the all clear we put him up on our
adoption page for rehoming, and the phone started ringing! Cluais has
been adopted by a lovely couple from Cork who tell us they already
love him to bits! As you can see from the photo they sent Eila today,
our little man is settling in nicely and is rather fond of his
creature comforts! This is all to Eila's enormous relief, as if she
had fostered Cluais much longer, the temptation to keep him might have
been too much! So today, it's smiles all round.

Welcome!
Hello to all, and welcome to the new Limerick Animal Welfare blog. We
are updating our website at the moment, and as part of its
redevelopment, we thought it would be fun to launch a blog to provide
an insight into the work we do.
Limerick Animal Welfare was founded in 1983 to care for unwanted and
abandoned animals in the Limerick area. We have rescued, rehabilitated
and rehomed many thousands of neglected cats and dogs. We are so proud
that after almost a quarter century in operation, our charity
continues to flourish. We feel there are two keys to our success. We
have an amazing group of hard-working volunteers, who give so freely
of their time and energies for the sake of the animals. We also owe an
enormous debt of gratitude to the people of Limerick, who have
supported us unstintingly over the years.
Our ultimate goal has always been to have our own sanctuary where all
our animals could be cared for at the one location. After many years
of fundraising, we bought a twenty five acre site in Kilfinane, County
Limerick and were granted planning permission to build our premises
there in five phases. Construction of phase one - the dogs' isolation
unit - began in May 2006 and is now very close to completion. We're
tantalisingly close to realising our dream, but we now need to raise
EUR70,000 for kitting out and fencing before the Sanctuary can open.
It has never been a more exciting, or challenging time to be a part of
