Dinner

It's been a week since I've had a drink and now I'm four into Amstel

Light, the beer drinker's light beer. Now, I just have to find my car

and I'm in business as far as din-din is concerned.

Breakthrough

My low-grade depression seems to have lifted and my confidence

returned after beginning my latest health kick.

Usually content to feel sorry for myself in my loser job, I sent out

some resumes from work this morning. Within four hours, to my

surprise, I had nailed down two job interviews and an additonal query

about my salary requirements. Damn. All I had to do was just fucking

try.

Now for the ladies....

Perspective

The real news about the weeklong rioting in the suburbs north of Paris

now is that the fighting and burning occurs on a regular basis, but

just not on quite such a sustained basis.

My Indian friend, a deeply conservative and traditional 25 year-old

with three Masters degrees, says that minorities are "trouble"

wherever they go. We have affirmative action in our country, too, he

says. Ironic how well he fits in with the most conservative of

Republicans, though he is in this country a minority.

No wonder France doubted our ability to occupy Iraq, I said, given

that they can't even occupy their own territory. For good measure,

every once in a while they'll bomb some former colony in north Africa,

responding to French casualities or rioting there. In France, the

French are fighting a civil war--and losing. CNN says today that the

Americans and Mexicans are fighting a border war in the Southwest--and

that the Americans are losing.

Regardless, I have a book recommendation: Republican Like Me, a memoir

about a Jewish gonzo journalist going under cover in various American

subcultures, beginning his journey by posing as a white supremacist

recruit. The supremacists fail to bat an eyelash when he suggests they
